Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week steer calves under 450 lbs were too lightly tested either this week or last to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noticed. 450 lbs steer calves and heavier sold generally steady. Heifer calves under 450 lbs sold generally steady in a narrow comparison. Heifers over 450 lbs sold mostly 4.00-8.00 lower. No yearling cattle were seen this sale. Calves sold on mostly moderate to good demand for moderate offerings. Cooperate packer buyers were back in the market this week and showed very good demand for attractive offerings. Demand for calves with both spring and fall vaccinations was good and prices overlapped in places as a result. Quality this week was mostly average to very attractive. Most offerings were offered in small to moderate size packages with no load lots seen. Canadian buyers were not as active this week as trucking has become tight and buyers report finding truck to ship cattle north to be difficult. A slightly smaller pool of buyers was seen this week however market activity was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows and bulls sold on moderate demand for very light offerings. Feeding cows, slaughter cows and slaughter bulls all sold steady with Wednesdays sale. Packer buyers showed moderate to good demand as they tried to fill loads before the weekend.

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.
