Compared to last sale (11-22-24): The last Friday feeder special was the Friday before Thanksgiving and market conditions have improved constantly since then. Feeder steer calves under 550 lbs sold 5.00-15.00 higher; steers 550-599 lbs sold generally steady to firm; Steers 600 lbs and heavier sold mostly 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifer calves all sold 10.00-15.00 higher. All yearling cattle were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Demand for limited yearlings was good. Calf quality was mostly average to attractive. Quality overall was more attractive than last sale. Demand for all calves to go to grass remains good to very good. Most calves were weaned this sale, many for 45-75 days. Package sizes were small to moderate today, however buyers showed good demand for all calves on offer as buyers pieced together loads. Singles and packages of 5 head or less continue to sell with a discount to large packages or partial load lots. Market activity was mostly active today. Weigh up cows and bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Demand was mostly moderate for light offerings. Cow quality today was mostly average to attractive. Weigh up conditions were mixed with some empty and some full cows noticed. Slaughter bulls sold on mostly good demand as quality was attractive.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
