Compared to last sale: Steers under 500 lbs sold unevenly steady from 10.00 higher to 10.00 lower;500-649 lbs sold mostly steady to weak; steer calves over 650 lbs sold mostly 4.00-8.00 lower. Heifer calves under 450 lbs sold mostly steady to 10.00 lower in a narrow compairson, heifers 500-650 lbs sold mostly 3.00-6.00 lower. Quality this week was mostly average to very attractive and overall much more attractive than last week. Calves were offered in larger packages this week which allowed buyers to start loads and build to them. Demand was mostly moderate to good for heavy offerings. Demand for load lots was mostly good this week as several were seen. Large price spreads were seen today due to a combination of factors including, both vaccination status and package size. A moderate size buyer pool was seen today. Demand did slip later in the sale as buyers filled loads. Weigh up cows and bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Due to the federal holiday weigh up cows and bulls were not reported this sale.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
