Compared to last week: Steer calves under 500 lbs traded 10.00-15.00 lower in a narrow comparison, steer calves over 500 lbs traded steady to 5.00 lower. Heifer calves under 550 lbs sold mostly steady to weak, heifers over 550 lbs sold steady to 8.00 lower. Demand was mostly light to moderate for light offerings. Quality today was mostly plain to average, with a limited number of attractive offerings seen. Quality was significantly lower than last weeks attractive offering. Demand was uneven today as light receipts caused many buyers to be conservative as they filled and started loads. Many were not willing to start fresh loads with light receipts, this caused large price spreads in places. Weather also weighed on the market as extreme cold was seen overnight and many calves showed signs of stress. Market activity was mostly slow to moderate as fewer buyers were seen this week compared to last. Weigh up cows sold on light demand for light offerings. Slaughter and feeding cows were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, steady to lower undertones were noticed in both classes. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Young age cows were of mostly plain quality and many sold to slaughter and feeding cow buyers this sale. Too few offerings were seen to develop any market trend.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
