Compared to last Friday: Yearling steers and heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Unweaned steers under 400 lbs were too lightly tested last sale to develop an accurate market trend, however sharply lower undertones were noticed. Feeder steers over 400 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower, except 550-599 lbs steers which sold mostly 2.00 higher. Unweaned heifers under 400 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher; heifers over 400 lbs sold steady to 4.00 lower. Demand was mostly light to moderate today for moderate to heavy offerings. Quality this sale was mixed from plain to attractive. Calves with 2 rounds of preconditioning shots sold with the best demand. Weaned calves are beginning to be marketed, demand was similar to unweaned calves this sale. Transportation is tight this week and demand lightened as buyers filled trucks. Many continental cross breed cattle sold this sale. Market activity was slow to moderate today. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate demand for light offerings. Slaughter cows sold generally steady to firm as packers attempted to fill loads for the week. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to weak. Cows and bulls offered average to below average weigh up conditions this sale. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed as feeding bull buyers pushed bull prices higher. Young age 2-3 year olds sold mostly 3.00-4.00 lower. Quality was mostly average this week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
