Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale: Feeder steers under 500 lbs traded 10.50 lower, while those between 500-700 lbs traded 1.75 to 9.75 higher. Steers between 700-800 lbs were 1.50 to 4.00 lower and over 800 lbs traded unevenly steady. Feeder heifers under 650 lbs traded 7.00 to 21.00 higher, while those between 650-850 lbs traded 1.00 to 5.50 higher and those over 850 lbs traded 9.00 to 24.00 higher. Average dress slaughter cows traded 4.00 to 4.50 lower with the exception of lean cows, which traded 5.00 higher. Slaughter bulls traded 3.75 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
