Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, slaughter cows and bulls were 3.00-6.00 higher. Demand was good on a moderate supply. Slaughter bulls continue to set new records with the top bull bringing 206.00/cwt. The top slaughter cow brought 156.00/cwt. Replacement cattle outnumbered slaughter animals almost 2 to 1 with the top bred cows bringing 2750.00/head and top pairs going for 2850.00/pair. Much needed rain fell over night and into the morning with reports of less than one-half inch to over 5 inches in isolated areas. The USDA released it's Cold Storage report on Wednesday and reported total pounds of beef in freezers were down 3 percent from the previous month and down slightly from last year.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
