Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to last week, there were too few calves across all weight ranges for an adequate comparison, however undertones were steady to weak. Demand was moderate on a very light supply. Muddy conditions in some areas and excessive heat and humidity in all areas kept receipts lighter than usual. The offering had only 11 drafts of 10 head or more with the largest draft of the day being 17 head. For the first time the Video Auction total of 1146 head exceeded the number of head through the ring. One stick-out draft on the video auction was 513 head of 910 lb. steers which sold for 338.25/cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
