***Close*** Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers were not well tested, however undertones were lower. Steer and heifers calves under 700 lbs. were 4.00-12.00 lower with spots 20.00 lower. Demand was moderate on a light supply. The quality of the offering was less than average compared to the outstanding offering last week, where four and seven weight steers topped Tuesday's nationwide sales. Most of the offering was in small drafts with only two drafts over 20 head compared to 47 drafts of 20 head or more last week. The largest draft of the day was 207 head of colored-up, slightly fleshy steers weighing 1047 lbs. which sold for 306.00/cwt. A bearish cattle on feed report was released Friday which had Inventories 2 percent higher, Placements 6 percent higher and Marketings 10 percent lower. Spot CME Feeder Cattle Futures responded negatively on Thursday and Friday losing over 15.00 and was unevenly steady on Tuesday after being closed for Memorial Day on Monday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
