Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers were 4.00-8.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves were 6.00-12.00 higher. Demand was good on a moderate supply. There was a good supply of feeder calves in the offering with the largest steer draft being 74 head weighing 707 lbs. which sold for 400.75/cwt. The largest heifer draft was 70 head weighing 724 lbs. which sold for 340.00/cwt. The CME cattle futures have continued to climb, led by feeder cattle futures. Boxed beef prices have leveled off as year-to-date, federally inspected cattle slaughter is down 9.8 percent. The USDA's Cattle on Feed Report, released Friday, reported Inventories were down slightly, Placements were 4 percent higher and Marketings were 7 percent lower than a year ago.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
