***Close*** Compared to last week, steer calves under 700 lbs. were uneven from 4.00 lower to 4.00 higher except for three weights which were 20.00 higher. Heifer calves under 700 lbs. were 4.00-8.00 higher with spots 12.00 higher. Yearling steers sold 4.00-8.00 higher with yearling heifers not well tested. Demand was very good on a moderate supply. The largest draft of the day was 147 head of 766 lb. steers which sold for 267.75/cwt. The USDA released its Cattle on Feed Report last week and had Inventories slightly higher and both Placements and Marketings 5 percent higher. Fat Cattle slaughter last week was the highest for the year at 631,000 head with demand expected to continue through the New Year.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
