Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to last week, steer calves under 650 lbs. were steady to 4.00 higher, while heavier weight steers were 4.00-8.00 higher. Heifer calves under 700 lbs. were 3.00-8.00 higher with spots 12.00 higher. Heavier weight heifers were not well tested. Demand was very good on a moderate supply. Much cooler weather brought the largest offering, since mid-May, to town. There were several pot load and multi-pot load drafts of yearlings in the offering. The largest draft of the day was 130 head of 819 lb. steers that brought 263.50/cwt. The USDA's Cattle on Feed Report released Friday had Inventories 1 percent higher, Placements 7 percent lower and Marketings 9 percent lower. The Cattle Futures responded by trading higher on Monday and continued the upward trend on Tuesday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
