Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold 3.00-6.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves under 600 lbs were steady to 5.00 higher in a lightly tested market. Demand was good on a light supply of calves and a moderate supply of yearlings. The offering consisted of several multi-pot load drafts of yearling steers and heifers. The largest draft offered was 167 head of 921lb. steers which brought 238.00/cwt. One stick-out draft was 129 head of 807 lb. heifers that sold for 239.50/cwt. Last week the 5-Area Average Price for fat cattle was at an all time high of 195.91. Box Beef Cutouts set a new high for 2024 with Choice Cuts closing at 330.39 today.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
