***Close*** Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves under 700 lbs. traded 3.00-6.00 lower in a light test of the market. Feeder calves and yearlings over 700 lbs. were not well tested however undertones were lower. Demand was moderate on a light supply. Much needed rain kept receipts light with some areas reporting in excess of 3 inches. The 5 Area Weekly Weighted Average Direct Slaughter Cattle for the week ending March 24, reported slaughter steers setting a new record weighted average price of 189.56 which was 2.09 higher than the previous week. The monthly USDA's Cattle on Feed Report released Friday, reported Inventories were up 1 percent, Placements up 10 percent and Marketings up 3 percent. Cattle futures closed lower on Monday and continued to trade sharply lower on Tuesday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
