***Close*** Compared to last week, steer calves under 450 lbs traded 4.00-8.00 higher with heavier weight steer and heifer calves uneven from 4.00 lower to 4.00 higher. There were too few yearlings last week for an adequate comparison however undertones were steady to weak. Demand was good on a moderate supply. The quality was above average with several large packages in the offering including a 227 head draft of 921 lb. steers which brought 174.00. Feeder Cattle and Live Cattle Futures opened the week lower with additional losses on Tuesday. The USDA's Cattle on Feed Report released last week reported Inventories and Placements slightly above a year ago with Marketings 6 percent higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
