Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to last week, steers and heifers under 800 lbs traded 3.00-7.00 higher with spots 12.00 higher while heavier weights traded steady. Demand was good on a heavy supply. Dry conditions continued across the area with more seasonal temperatures and less humidity. Several multi-pot load drafts of stocker and feeder calves as well as yearlings were in the offering including 780 head of eight-weight steers which sold through the Video Auction. The USDA's Cattle on Feed released last week reported, Inventories up 1 percent, Placements down 2 percent, Marketings up 2 percent and Other Disapperances up 13 percent, compared to a year ago.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
