Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 5.00-10.00 higher. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. Heifers weighing 600-700lbs 15.00-20.00 higher. Steer calves 10.00-15.00 higher. Heifer calves steady to 5.00 higher. The feeder market continued to strengthen this week, building on gains established last week. Buyer demand remained good. The calf market improved as scattered rainfall across Oklahoma, over the past two weeks, has increased buyer confidence and demand. Farmers are beginning to actively seek calves in anticipation of wheat pasture. Slaughter cows 1.00-3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 2.00 higher. The slaughter market was highly variable across the state this week, with price spreads wider than normal. Welcome relief from the heat is forecasted for next week with highs mostly in the 80s.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
