Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers over 900lbs steady to 2.00 lower, under 900lbs 7.00-11.00 lower. Feeder heifers 8.00-16.00 lower. Steer calves over 500lbs 12.00-15.00 lower, under 500lbs 20.00-30.00 lower. Heifer calves 10.00-20.00 lower. Demand moderate. Slaughter cows 5.00-7.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 6.00 lower. The heat has taken a toll on all classes of cattle this week, with even slaughter cows and bulls trading sharply lower. As a reference point, five weight steers are currently trading at 4.28 down from an average of 5.09 just about 60 days ago. Eight weight steers are currently averaging 3.38, compared to 3.84 for the week ending, June 26th.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
