Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers over 800lbs 1.00-3.00 higher, under 800lbs 5.00-10.00 lower. Feeder heifers 5.00-10.00 lower except 600-700lbs 10.00-20.00 lower. Steer calves over 500lbs 4.00-5.00 lower, under 500lbs unevenly steady. Heifer calves 10.00-15.00 lower. Demand moderate. Slaughter cows 3.00-4.00 lower. Lean cows 5.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 2.00 lower. CME futures continue the downward slide as the August feeder cattle contract is down 16.00 from Wednesday, July 8th. Meanwhile, live cattle, August contract, is down almost 13.00 from trading on July 6th. The sharp correction in the futures market has created increased volatility and uncertainty, and the cash market is feeling the pressure as lower board prices have weighed on cash trade. Negotiated cash trade in the Northern Plains on Thursday was from 233.00-240.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
