Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers over 800 lbs 5.00-10.00 higher; under 800 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers 4.00-10.00 higher. Steer calves mostly steady. Heifer calves 2.00-6.00 higher. Demand moderate to good with mid to late week sales showing very good demand. When cash slaughter trade hit 255.00 and 400.00 in the meat, demand for feeders went thru the roof. Grass accounts have definitely been filled as lighter weight feeders cheapened up. More un-weaned calves continue to come to town and demand moderate to good for these. Weather was 90 on Monday only to drop to the 60's the next day and these conditions can be detrimental for those calves. Slaughter cows mostly steady, except Lean cows sold 8.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 6.00 higher. Packer demand continues good especially for those leaner types as packer continue to compete with replacement/feeder buyers for these cows.

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
