Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers over 700lbs steady to 3.00 higher and under 700lbs up to 10.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves up to 20.00 higher. Demand very good for calves. The rain across Oklahoma has produced green wheat. Farmers have come to town to stock fields and the market has benefited. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher. Lean cows 4.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 2.00 higher. Supply included: 89% Feeder Cattle (55% Steers, 40% Heifers, 5% Bulls); 8% Slaughter Cattle (90% Cows, 10% Bulls, 0% Dairy Cows); 3% Replacement Cattle (26% Stock Cows, 63% Bred Cows, 4% Bred Heifers, 7% Cow-Calf Pairs, 0% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 46%.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
