Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 6.00-8.00 lower. Feeder heifers 2.00-6.00 lower. Demand moderate at best for the lighter numbers of feeders. Cattle futures struggled to trade on the positive side this week. Limited feedlot space and bearish expectations for the upcoming Cattle on Feed report gave aid to the negative trading. Steer calves sold 2.00-8.00 lower and heifer calves 2.00-4.00 lower. Farmers very busy trying to get the winter wheat pasture planted before the expected rain early next week. The first frost of the season hit the state this past week and this brought many cows to town, though these numbers are so far running about half of a year ago. Slaughter cows sold steady to 4.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 1.00-2.00 lower. Packer demand light to moderate.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
