Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers mostly steady. Steer calves under 500 lbs 3.00-8.00 lower; over 500 lbs 1.00-3.00 higher. Heifer calves steady to 2.00 higher. Demand moderate to good for calves. Demand remains good for feeder cattle despite a week of mostly declining Feeder cattle futures. Cattle on Feed report due out today and is expected to show a lighter Placement number but also lighter Marketing numbers. Close-out figures at the feedyard remain in the green while the Packer is struggling to get out of the red. Boxed Beef prices are moving on up though. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-5.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 3.00-4.00 lower. Packer demand moderate at best. Many kids headed back to school and orders for school lunch programs should be complete by now. Heavy rains mostly in Northern Oklahoma these past 30 days has drastically changed the drought situation, however summer has taken a hold and the next several days are expected to be 100+ degrees across the whole state. Will be looking to the Tropics in the next 10 days to bring some relief.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
