Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers mostly steady. Feeder heifers steady, instance to 3.00 higher on 7 weights. Demand moderate to good for feeder cattle. Steer calves steady, except for 3 weights which sold 10.00-15.00 higher. Heifer calves sold 1.00-5.00 higher. Recent rains and sunshine has improved wheat pasture some, making light weight cattle the optimum for turn out. Beef prices rose sharply early in the week only to see them fall back later. Feedyards struggled to get anything better than mostly steady with last week on slaughter cattle prices and movement was light to moderate. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower. Slaughter bulls were 2.00-3.00 higher. Packer demand moderate.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
