Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers sold 3.00-8.00 higher. Feeder heifers 1.00-4.00 higher. Demand very good for feeder cattle as limited numbers continue to be the headline and out of state buyers also competing for supply. Steer calves sold 6.00-8.00 higher with 300-400 lbs. up to 20.00 higher. Heifer calves sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Demand for calves improved as rains is falling in some areas of the state and temperatures have cooled down. Slaughter cows sold mostly 3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 1.00 lower. Demand moderate as large numbers of cows continue to move to market.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
