Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last full test two weeks ago: Feeder steers and heifers 2.00-5.00 higher. Steer calves 1.00-5.00 lower. Heifer calves 1.00-4.00 higher. Demand good for feeder cattle with best demand on heavier weights. It seems buyers would rather invest in the weight than the gains. Demand moderate for calves as hot dry weather is limiting outlets for calves. Slaughter cows sold 7.00-8.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 9.00 lower. Slaughter cow markets cratered this week as large numbers moved to market. Hot, dry conditions is limiting pasture grazing and hay supplies are tight. Temperatures of 100+ are expected thru to next Friday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
