Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: This week 2,342 cows and bulls sold with 72 percent going to packers; Last week: 2,078 and 67 percent; Last Year 2,385 head sold with 71 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 1.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 lower. Demand moderate for feeder cattle despite cattle futures trading mostly in the red this week. Steer calves sold 2.00-6.00 lower, most declines under 500 lbs. Heifer calves 1.00-4.00 lower. Demand moderate to good for calves. Supplies beginning to include more un-weaned calves. Weather again hot and humid this past week, however a not so hot front is moving down bringing along, chances for rain and cooler temps for the next couple of days. Slaughter cows 2.00-3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold 2.00 lower. Demand moderate for cows and bulls.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
