Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: 3,451 cows and bulls sold with 73 percent going to packers; Last week: 382 with 64 percent going to packers; Last year: 2,651 with 65 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Feeder steers 3.00-5.00 higher. Feeder heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher. Limited steer and heifer calves traded throughout the state, however few sales were steady to 4.00 lower. Demand for feeder cattle very good. Warmer and more seasonable weather moved across the state this week and is expected to remain through next week. Slaughter cattle prices rose this week with good to excellent demand. Slaughter cows sold 8.00-10.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 5.00-10.00 higher. Packer demand very good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?
