Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: 2,410 cows and bulls sold with 62 percent going to packers; Last week: 2,576 with 70 percent going to packers; Last year: 1,935 with 69 percent going to packers Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers steady to 5.00 lower. Steer and heifer calves sold 4.00-8.00 lower. Demand moderate for all classes. Corn prices continue to push higher but leveled off late in the week as corn planting is just beginning. Wheat conditions are on the minds of many following last week's spring freeze. Rains finally came to the state with many areas in the southeast receiving over 5 inches. Slaughter cows and bulls sold unevenly steady. Packer demand moderate.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
