Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: 2,924 cows and bulls sold with 62 percent going to packers; Last week: 2,547 with 54 percent going to packers; Last year: 1,074 with 59 percent going to packers. Compared to last week:: Feeder cattle began the week steady to 3.00 higher, however corn prices moved higher and feeder cattle futures moved lower as the week progressed. Feeder steers and heifers finished the week 2.00-6.00 lower with light to moderate demand. Steer and heifer calves were unevenly steady. Cooler temperatures and rain showers have settled in, however the moisture is greatly needed. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 4.00 lower with moderate demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
