Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: 2,398 cows and bulls sold with 61 percent going to packers; Last week: 1,804 with 59 percent going to packers; Last year: 2,470 with 61 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers mostly 2.00-6.00 higher, with late sales moving back towards steady. Steer and heifer calves sold 3.00-8.00 higher. Demand extremely good early in the week, however grains pushed sharply higher at mid week and that demand subsided. Demand for light cattle or grazing fleshed cattle continues very good as pastures are beginning to green up. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-8.00 higher. Slaughter bulls steady to 4.00 higher. Packer demand was also very good, despite a slight increase in numbers this week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
