Market comments — USDA reporter

Special Note: Special Note: For NASS: This week: 1,838 cows and bulls sold with 50 percent going to packers; Last Week: 2,290 head sold with 64 percent going to packers; Last Year: 479 head sold with 79 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Combined weighted average for 7 auctions: Ada, Apache, McAlester, OKC, OKC West, Tulsa, and Woodward. Feeder steers sold 2.00-8.00 higher. Feeder heifers mostly steady to 6.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves mostly steady to 5.00 higher. Demand moderate to good for all classes. The panhandle experienced blizzard conditions later this week. Most parts of the trade region can expect to see rain in the forecast for next week. Slaughter cows sold steady to 1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 higher. Packer demand moderate to good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
