Market comments — USDA reporter

Special Note: For NASS: This week: 1,478 cows and bulls sold with 69 percent going to packers; Last Week: 0 head sold with 0 percent going to packers; Last Year: 1,938 head sold with 52 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Combined weighted average for 7 auctions: : Ada, Apache, McAlester, OKC, OKC West, Tulsa, and Woodward. All cattle tested on light receipts. Feeder steers sold unevenly steady. Feeder heifers mostly steady to 2.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves were too lightly tested, but had instances of 5.00-10.00 higher. Demand moderate for feeder cattle, good for calves. Warmer weather made it's way across the trade region this week melting most of the snow. Conditions remain muddy in most areas. Warm weather is expected to continue next week with scattered rain chances. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-5.00 higher. Slaughter bulls steady on very light receipts. Demand good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
