Market comments — USDA reporter

Special Note: For NASS: This week: 3,220 cows and bulls sold with 58 percent going to packers; Last week: 2,579 head sold with 63 percent going to packers; Last Year: 4,232 head sold with 44 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Combined weighted average for 7 auctions: Ada, Apache, McAlester, OKC, OKC West, Tulsa, and Woodward. Feeder steers sold steady to 2.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 lower. Steer calves mostly steady to 5.00 higher, instances of 12.00-15.00 higher. Feeder heifer calves mostly steady, instances of 8.00-10.00 higher. Demand moderate for feeders and good for calves. Cooler weather is expected to move in over the weekend and into next week. Many areas of the trade region will have a chance of snow next week. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 1.00-7.00 higher. Packer demand good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
