Market comments — USDA reporter

Special Note: For NASS: This week: 1,377 cows and bulls sold with 71 percent going to packers; Last week: 4,165 head sold with 54 percent going to packers; Last Year: 959 head sold with 80 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Combined weighted average for 3 auctions: Ada, OKC, Tulsa. Feeder cattle sold mostly 3.00-5.00 higher on a light test. Steer and heifer calves 3.00-7.00 higher on a light test. Demand good for all classes. Many barns experiencing lighter numbers this week due to the thanksgiving holiday. Combined weighted average for 3 auctions: OKC, Tulsa, and Woodward. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 6.00 lower. Packer demand moderate.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
