Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: This week: 2,910 cows and bulls sold with 65 percent going to packers; Last week: 1,834 head sold with 60 percent going to packers; Last Year: 4,064 head sold with 63 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Combined weighted average for 7 auctions: Ada, Apache, McAlester, OKC, OKC West, Tulsa, and Woodward. Feeder steers sold 8.00-12.00 higher. Feeder heifers 7.00-12.00 higher. Steer calves mostly 3.00-8.00 higher with instances of 10.00-15.00 higher and heifer calves mostly 4.00-12.00 higher. Demand good for feeder cattle and calves. Auction numbers were lighter again this week as muddy conditions remain from last weeks ice storm that moved across the state. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 higher. Slaughter bulls steady to 7.00 higher on light receipts. Packer demand good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
