Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 5.00-10.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves 10.00-20.00 higher. Demand extremely good for all classes with very active trade. Quality average to attractive. Cattle futures continue to move higher but took an about face, closing lower ahead of this week's Cattle Inventory report. More spring like weather is in the forecast for this week and this on the heels of good rains over many areas of the state. Rain is a good thing but many cattle in supply carrying some mud. The effect of January's winter storms is beginning to show on much of the State's wheat pasture as it has turned a light brown. We will see what the long term effects those extreme cold temperatures had.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
