Market comments — USDA reporter

*** Add Close with updated receipts *** Compared to last week: Feeder cattle remain very lightly tested. Feeder steers 2.00-5.00 lower. Feeder heifers mostly steady. Demand for feeder cattle moderate but quality plain to average. Weaned calves mostly steady. Un-weaned or short weaned calves 5.00-10.00 lower. As normal of the time of year, many cattle are un-weaned and these selling to limited demand. Cold front moved in over the weekend and areas to the north and west woke with a little frost on the pumpkin. Weather to remain dry the rest of the week with the next chance of rain coming just over a week from now. Slaughter cattle prices moved higher last week and cattle futures did a flip and closed the day in the red.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
