Market comments — USDA reporter

*** Close *** Compared to the last sale two week's ago: Feeder steers 1.00-4.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Steer calves 2.00-4.00 lower. Heifer calves 2.00-5.00 lower. Demand good for feeder cattle; moderate for calves. Cattle futures worked their way higher late last week and once again today. Several un-weaned calves available this second full week of September, leading many to believe the fall calf run has begun. A Cool front came in today, bringing some much needed rain and more fall like temps for much of the state. This is expected to last most of the week. Timely moisture and cooler temps has farmers busy planting wheat. Quality plain to average.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
