Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

***Add Close *** Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 2.00 - 4.00 higher, with instances to 10.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves 6.00 - 10.00 higher. Demand moderate to good. Demand very good for calves. Quality average to attractive. Weather remains fairly mild for the season and wheat pasture is in good shape for grazing cattle. Slaughter cattle prices improved once again last week helping the demand for feeder cattle. Today's sale included a benefit for the All American Beef Battalion. This organization raises funds to feed steak dinners to our service members and their families. Since it's beginning in 2008 they have fed over 400,000 steaks. This year's benefit raised over $56,000 for this project.
