Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 5.00-10.00 higher. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. The steer market opened on a very strong note, with prices dollars higher. About half way through the steer turn, quality and condition began to decline, bringing buyer interest to a halt. The heifer market struggled to establish any momentum, as overall quality and condition was limited throughout the heifer run. Buyer interest remained selective with little aggressiveness shown. On Wednesday, the Daube Ranch had some bred heifers that sold well: 38 head 953lbs yearlings 3-5 months black baldies $3600 and blacks and baldies with horns 12 head 895lbs yearlings 3-5 months $3000. Steer calves 10.00-20.00 higher. Heifer calves 15.00-25.00 higher. Calf quality was better this week which caused buyers to be more aggressive. All classes of cattle sold very well Tuesday, with strong buyer demand evident across the board regardless of quality or condition. Tuesday's supply included 68% un-weaned cattle.
