Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers over 900lbs 6.00-10.00 lower, under 900lbs 15.00-20.00 lower. Feeder heifers 10.00-15.00 lower. Quality played a significant role in today's lower market as there were very few top-quality cattle offered. Steer calves over 500lbs unevenly steady, under 500lbs 10.00-15.00 higher. Heifer calves over 500lbs 3.00-8.00 lower, under 500lbs 10.00-15.00 higher. Quality played little role in the calf market, as buyers were primarily focused on filling orders for specific weight classes. Calf demand centered on cattle carrying thinner flesh, resulting in an uneven market as discounts were applied to cattle carrying excess condition.
