Compared to last week: Feeder steers 10.00-15.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 6.00 lower. CME futures opened sharply lower this morning but heifer prices continued to remain relatively strong compared to what most buyers expected before the sale started. As the steer run started at about 11am, steers started steady to 7.00 lower. By the close of the board, with feeder cattle futures down over 5.00, steers prices were 8.00-12.00 lower. At the end of the steer run, steers were trading 10.00-15.00 lower. Summertime cattle sold well today, as several larger drafts traded at prices very close to top-end number 1 cattle money. Steer and heifer calves 10.00-20.00 lower compared to the light test of last week. Monday was a very hot and humid day across the trading area, and, as expected on Tuesday, the bulk of supply consisted of cattle still carrying fescue hair. Rain chances are forecasted for the rest of the week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
