Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 2.00 lower, over 900 lbs 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers mostly steady to 3.00 lower, decline over 800 lbs. Overall market was uneven. Cattle futures trading lower most of the day but feeder futures flipped on the close and turned higher. Feeder demand good thru the day with active trade. Cattle in medium to fleshy conditions. Several replacement heifer buyers in the house today and they were active buyers. Steer calves over 550lbs unevenly steady, under 550lbs 10.00-15.00 lower. Heifer calves 3.00-9.00 lower. Demand moderate. One consignor did bring a set of fancy calves in large drafts and those cattle sold better than the top end for last week. Buyers continue to give it all for front end cattle, but the overall quality was not there today. A cold front swept through this morning, dropping high temperatures into the low 60s and bringing some rainfall, though the heavier amounts were mostly confined to Southeastern Oklahoma.
