Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week's thin test, comparable offerings of steers under 500 lbs sold 10.00 higher, 500 to 550 lbs sold steady and over 550 lbs sold 6.00 to 10.00 lower. Heifer calves sold 7.00 to 10.00 higher with yearling weight heifers 6.00 lower. Good ole CME cattle boards making it difficult for buyers to figure out where they need to procure cattle at. The board has been sharply lower the last several weeks more days than higher. Several strings of flyweight longtime weaned calves on the market Thursday with several buyers chasing each other on the bids. The market was active on these light weight cattle with in house and internet bidding.
