Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 550 lbs 8.00 to 15.00, over 550 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 lower. Feeder heifers 5.00 to 10.00 lower, except 450-500 lbs 20.00 higher. Good to very good demand, best demand at those early week auctions before the futures complex traded sharply lower. Cash fed cattle topped at 208.00, but by Friday reported sales of 203.00 surfaced. Packers are beginning to cut their daily kills as they try to stabilize the boxed beef market. Cattle feeders have been very bullish but were willing to accept lower money, still at a level that was not expected just a couple of months ago. A winter storm bringing snow and wind at midweek did result in lighter feeder cattle receipts at some locations.
