Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers unevenly steady, except 400-450 lbs 20.00 higher and 750-800 lbs 10.00 lower. Feeder heifers 5.00 to 10.00 higher, instances of 15.00 to 20.00 higher. Very good demand for steers and heifers this week as cash fed cattle spiked up to 206.00. The market was very active but Thursdays' downturn in the futures contracts did put some pressure on the market. There has been such a large volume of cattle offered for sale since the start of the year across the greater region that empty pens have now been filled. There is still great optimism for the coming months in the cash fat cattle market but some buyers have slowed their pursuit as there are just so many cattle to choose from.
