Compared to last week: Yearling feeder steers steady to 5.00 lower, heifers steady to 3.00 lower. Steer and heifer calves not well tested last week to offer a price comparison. Demand remains good for yearling steers and heifers, yet the market is not near as active as what it was a month ago as the Live Cattle futures contracts are not at levels that cattle feeders had hoped for. Cash fed cattle in the 183.00-184.00 range, but that basis level is much narrower than it has been throughout the rest of the year, which is causing concern that the market might not reach the highs necessary for the yearlings that were bought this summer to breakeven. Good demand for spring born calves as these cattle cost so much less than a yearling steer and those producers who sold yearlings had a really good year and are willing to buy these calves at these price levels. Still not seeing a large offering of calves in the auctions yet as grass conditions remain sufficient.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
