Feeder cattle 15,937 14,108 14,512

Compared to two weeks ago: Steer calves under 600 lbs 10.00 to 20.00 higher, over 600 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Heifer calves under 500 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher, over 500 lbs 6.00 to 9.00 higher. Very good demand for feeder cattle this week as all auction locations returned to their normal sale schedule after the Thanksgiving holiday break. The cash fed cattle moved higher again, 157.00-159.00, which helped to add strength to the feeder cattle market. The fed market has now reached higher levels than what the Live Cattle futures would reach in the spring months, further feeding the bullish psychology of cattle feeders. Very large auction receipts will be expected as only a couple weeks remain for feeder cattle producers who want to sell before the end of the calendar year as most locations will shut down for two full weeks for the Christmas holiday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
