Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 750 lbs steady to 5.00 higher, over 750 lbs unevenly steady. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. A very large offering of feeder cattle this week after the-arctic-like weather from last week was replaced with much warmer temperatures. Cattle producers were able to easily, and safely, ship their stock to town and were eager to do so after enduring temps of -30 to care for their stock. Calving time is quickly nearing and producers will need the extra space and want to get last year’s cattle sold before then. The CME Live Cattle futures added pressure to the market and cash fed cattle market continues to disappoint as cattle feeders just can’t get the leverage they need to push the market to 120.00 like they need. Demand remains very good for light weight cattle to background on grass as spring time is quickly nearing, more moderate for heavier cattle that are bound for finishing yards as higher feed costs and a struggling fed cattle market are keeping cattle feeders on the defensive.
